Tracey Benton and her lovely felt sculptures are new to 45 Southside and already very popular.
Tracey spent many years studying and exploring ceramics, but the moment she started experimenting with wool, she was hooked. It’s a lovely natural material to work with and she is particularly drawn to its textural and sculptural qualities.
Tracey uses a process called needle felting (also known as dry felting) to create her birds and beasts. She uses a special needle with tiny notches that catches and binds the fibres together. Each piece is sculpted by hand and takes several hours to make. Details are added to the work using embroidery and beads. Her pieces are displayed on handmade ceramic bases ensuring each piece is truly unique.
Tracey draws her inspiration from the natural world around her: birds twittering at the bottom of the garden or a cheeky fox crossing her path when she is out walking the dog near her home in North Devon.

Happy New Year! We have had a busy start to 2014 and lots of new work for you on display. The days are getting marginally longer and we are looking forward to spring here in the gallery.
We will be closing for a day or two during the week in the beginning of February. The walls need a bit of a spring lift. If you are making a special trip, please ring ahead to check.
We have had some great new work by Jenny Beavan for the New Year. This series of wonderfully energetic ceramic wallpanels are made from china clay. They are inspired by water, particularly the Tides. Rather unusually for Jenny we also have a panel on a red glass background on display.
The newest artist to exhibit at 45 Southside is Emma West. Emma’s porcelain wall panels start as emboidery, which is impressed onto the clay and details are picked up with colouring and glazes.
We have had a number of Zoe Coles’ amazingly life-like and lively animal sculptures in the past. This little fox is fast making friends in the gallery. Zoe’s sculptures are modelled in papiermache and then coated with resin and metal to appear like copper, silver or iron.
Beverley Bailey has been busy embroidering books for us as well.
We could not bear to pack these lovely glass baubles by Emmy-Gai Palmer away after Christmas. We have a really cheerful selection of spring colours available. Hang them all year round in a window and watch the light change.
Corinna Butler has also some new glass work on display. Her work is mounted and framed. She draws her inspiration from her scuba-diving hobby and is displayed together with Richard Glass’ Splash sculptures.
For details on the artists, their work and to see a selection in more detail, please visit our online shop. You can also always send us an email or ring. The contact details can be found in the about us section.
After graduating from Leicester Polytechnic in 1978 with a B.A. Hons. in three dimensional design, Janie received a Turkish Government scholarship to study Turkish Ceramics. Based in Istanbul, she travelled widely developing her interest in the fascinating art and culture of this extraordinary country. On return, she worked as an Archaeological Draftsperson at Dover Museum in Kent, drawing their collection of Medieval and Roman pottery for records and reports.
Since moving to Devon, she has been working in stoneware, making sculptural pieces and hand built vessels. Janie sometimes smoke fires her pieces and finds the immediacy of this method exciting and stimulating. Her inspiration and interest centres around the female nude and the dramatic moorland and coastal landscapes of Devon and Cornwall. Her time spent in Turkey, with its extraordinary range of antique and contemporary ceramics, and at the museum in Dover have had an underlying influence on all her creative endeavours.
